Buying a used plate roll

Plate rolls are specified by the plate they can handle — width, thickness and the minimum diameter they can reach — and by the roll configuration.

Three-roll initial-pinch machines are the simplest and cheapest, but they leave a flat unbent section at both ends of the plate. Three-roll double-pinch and four-roll machines pre-bend both ends, producing a rounder cylinder with less scrap and less secondary work. A four-roll machine also grips the plate throughout, which makes it faster and easier to load single-handed.

Ratings are given for mild steel at a stated yield strength. Rolling higher-strength or stainless plate, or rolling to a tighter diameter than the machine is rated for, both reduce effective capacity. Work from the manufacturer’s chart rather than the headline figure.

On used machines, inspect the rolls for wear, scoring and deflection, and check the crowning. Re-machining or replacing a roll is one of the largest single costs on an older plate roll. Hydraulic condition and the state of the controls come next.
