When considering a used Haas VF2 CNC Vertical Machining Center, you’ll want to determine which software upgrades may fit your application and save you time. These upgrades may be installed in the field, which is a great selling point when deciding between a new or used machine.

The ability to also add 4th and 5th axis capability with a rotary table or trunnion table also expands a user’s production and can be sold with a used Haas VF-2.

Before you buy

Which one fits the work?

Two things decide it: your budget, and the size of the parts you are making.

A VF is the machine for production runs. A Mini Mill suits smaller parts. A TM is an entry-level machine, or the one for a single job run.

Getting one inspected

We always strongly recommend an inspection before you buy. KD does not perform it ourselves — the inspection is done by you, by a third-party technician, or by the OEM.

We have a network of 3rd party techs whom we can recommend. Most buyers are looking at a machine in another state or across the country, and sending a tech who is already nearby saves the travel time and cost of going to see it yourself.

An inspection on a machining centre goes through the major components: the tool changer, the guides, the way covers, drawbar pressure, motion in all axes, and the spindle running at both low and high rpm.

Spindle hours are worth confirming rather than taking from a listing, because an hours meter can be reset. A high-hour machine that has been maintained regularly is a lot better than a lower-hour machine that has been neglected.

Buy the options from the factory

We would not recommend buying a machine and adding options later. It is very expensive to do so if it did not come out of the factory with those options.

A 4th or 5th axis is the exception, and the only option worth adding afterwards. Everything else is either not easy to do, not possible at all, or would simply cost more than it is worth.
