What should you ask about first?

Three things, and they come before price: travels, table size and spindle taper. Between them they answer whether the part fits, whether the machine can reach all of it, and whether your tooling will go into it.

Travels tell you whether the part fits, and they are recorded on almost every machine we list. Read them together rather than one at a time: a long X travel is no use if Y or Z will not clear the work. The spread across this class is enormous, which is the clearest sign that “vertical machining center” describes a family rather than a size of machine.

Table size is the one to ask us about. We do not record it on most of our listings, so on a lot of machines it simply is not shown — which is not the same as the machine not having a table worth checking. Tell us the part and we will get you the table dimensions and the load capacity.

Spindle taper decides what tooling the machine takes, and it is the specification most likely to rule a machine out after you have already fallen for it. Across the 1,768 machines where we have it recorded:

Three quarters of the used market is CAT 40. If that is what your shop already tools for, you are shopping in the deepest part of the pool — and, on our own numbers, the cheapest. If you need CAT 50 for heavier cuts, or BT 30 on a high-speed tapping centre, the choice narrows sharply, and it is worth knowing that before you start rather than after.

Read that price column as a description of the machines, not of the taper. Nobody pays more for a bigger cone. A CAT 50 spindle sits on a heavier machine built for deeper cuts, and the HSK machines we have listed are high-speed and late-model, which is why their median is roughly four times the CAT 40 figure. The taper is a reliable shorthand for what class of machine you are looking at, and that is what makes it useful this early in the search.

Across the 1,459 vertical machining centers KD has listed with a published price, most fall between $28,750 and $89,750. The full range runs from $4,750 to $995,000, which tells you how wide this class is — a small tapping centre and a double-column five-axis machine are both vertical machining centers.

Looking only at what is available now, the typical range is a little lower: $21,250 to $74,500 across 152 priced live machines. That is not a market movement. It reflects what happens to be on the floor.

Two things move a machine within that range more than anything else: the builder, and how old it is. The median machine KD has listed was built in 2014, and the class spans 1989 to 2025.

Which builders should you be looking at?

Haas is 52.5% of every vertical machining center KD has listed — more than half the class, and across 97 distinct models. Nothing else is close. It is the most popular CNC brand in the United States and it is built in the US, so there are a lot of them on the used market. That volume is worth something to a buyer: more machines to choose from, more people who can run one, and easier parts and support.

Read that table carefully, because price and age move together here. The two dearest makes on the list, DMG Mori and Doosan, are also two of the newest — both at a median build year of 2016. So the spread between them and a Haas is not purely a builder premium; some of it is simply that the machines are younger.

Mazak is the exception worth noticing. Its median machine is three years older than the median Haas and still asks nearly twice as much. That is the one line in the table where the builder, rather than the age, is doing the work.

Mazak, DMG Mori and Okuma are built in Japan and hold tighter tolerances, which is what you are paying for. They will make more precise parts, and they are priced accordingly.

Fadal is worth a look at the other end. It is a good, reliable machine that is easy to use, and a solid option. It is also the cheapest way into this class by a distance — a median of $19,750 against $49,900 for a Haas. Two things account for that gap: age and support. The median Fadal we have listed was built in 2004, ten years older than the median machine in this guide, and support for a machine of that age is harder to come by than it is for a builder still selling new machines today.

Should you have it inspected before you buy?

We always strongly recommend an inspection before you buy. KD does not perform it ourselves — the inspection is done by you, by a third-party technician, or by the OEM.

We have a network of 3rd party techs whom we can recommend. Most buyers are looking at a machine in another state or across the country, and sending a tech who is already nearby saves the travel time and cost of going to see it yourself.

An inspection on a machining centre goes through the major components: the tool changer, the guides, the way covers, drawbar pressure, motion in all axes, and the spindle running at both low and high rpm.

Spindle hours are worth confirming rather than taking from a listing, because an hours meter can be reset. A high-hour machine that has been maintained regularly is a lot better than a lower-hour machine that has been neglected.

Should you buy the options from the factory?

We would not recommend buying a machine and adding options later. It is very expensive to do so if it did not come out of the factory with those options.

A 4th or 5th axis is the exception, and the only option worth adding afterwards. Everything else is either not easy to do, not possible at all, or would simply cost more than it is worth.
