Buyers of used CNC lathes almost always open with the same three questions: how many hours does it have, what control is on it, and can I see it run under power. Those matter more than the dimensions. Most CNC lathes KD lists fall between $39,500 and $129,500.

What should you ask about first?

Most buying guides for this machine start with bar capacity and chuck size. That is not what buyers ask us. Three questions come up before anything else, and they are the right three:

1. How many hours does it have?
2. What control is on it?
3. Are there any issues, and can I see it run under power?

Dimensions matter, and you will need them — but they are a filter, not a decision. Two lathes with identical bar capacity and chuck size can be completely different purchases depending on those three answers.

On hours specifically: it is hit or miss on any used machine listing, ours included. Where we have the figure, we try to publish a photo of the hours screen with the machine, because a photograph of the control showing its own runtime is worth more than a number typed into a form. Where you do not see one, ask. Quote the reference number on the listing and we will get you the hours if the machine has them available.

The same goes for seeing it run. A machine still under power is a machine you can evaluate properly, and whether one is still installed and running is something worth establishing before you travel to see it.

What control is on it, and how much does that matter?

The control determines who can program the machine, what your existing post-processors will do with it, and how easily you can get support in five years. It is worth deciding before you shortlist machines rather than after.

Across the CNC lathes KD has listed, the split is:

• Fanuc — 564 machines, median asking price about $79,999. The most widely supported control in the industry, and the one most shops already have people for.
• Haas — 459 machines, median about $49,500. Straightforward to learn, and the machines carrying it are the most common on the US used market.
• Mazatrol (Mazak) — 156 machines, median about $124,500. Conversational programming that operators either strongly prefer or do not.
• Okuma OSP — 99 machines, median about $109,999.
• Mori (MSX and MAPPS) — 97 machines, median about $89,500.
• Smaller numbers carry Mitsubishi, DMG Mori’s CELOS and Siemens.

Those medians are not a ranking of control quality — they largely reflect the machines each control tends to be fitted to. But if your shop is standardised on one control family, that is a genuine reason to weight your search, and it is the second question buyers ask us for good reason.

We record the control on the large majority of machines we list, so this is one you can usually answer from the page.

Do you need live tooling or a sub-spindle?

These are the two options that change what a lathe can actually do, and they carry a real premium. In KD’s own listings:

• Machines with live tooling: median asking price about $99,900. Machines it is not listed on: about $47,900.
• Machines with a sub-spindle: median about $119,500. Machines it is not listed on: about $69,500.

Read those as an indication of what the market asks, not as the price of the option itself — machines fitted with live tooling and sub-spindles tend to be newer and better specified in other ways too, so some of that gap is the rest of the machine.

The decision is about the part. Live tooling lets you mill, drill and tap on the lathe instead of moving the part to a second machine. A sub-spindle lets you transfer the part and finish the back end in one cycle. Both are how a two-operation part becomes a one-operation part — and if that is what your work looks like, the premium buys back real floor time. If it is not, you are paying for capability that will sit idle.

Which builders should you be looking at?

Haas is 29% of every CNC lathe KD has ever listed — more than any other builder by a wide margin. It is the most popular CNC brand in the United States and it is built in the US, so there are simply a lot of them on the used market. That volume is worth something to a buyer: more machines to choose from, more people who can run one, and easier parts and support.

Mazak, DMG Mori and Okuma are built in Japan and hold tighter tolerances, which is what you are paying for. They will make more precise parts, and they are priced accordingly.

KD’s own numbers show that premium clearly, and in a way that makes the point better than a claim would — the Mazak machines we have listed are on average five years older than the Haas machines and still ask nearly two and a half times as much:

The honest way to use this: decide what tolerance your parts actually require. If a Haas holds it, a Haas is the right machine and the extra money is better spent on tooling, a bar feeder, or hours. If your parts need more than that, the premium is not a luxury.

Why is a Daewoo cheaper than a Doosan?

Because they are the same builder, and Daewoo is the older name. Doosan acquired the machine tool business, so a Daewoo-badged machine simply predates a Doosan-badged one.

KD’s listings show exactly that. The Daewoo machines we have handled were built between 1995 and 2006, median 2000, at a median asking price of about $22,900. The Doosan machines span 2001 to 2023, median 2014, at about $89,750.

So the price difference is age, not a different class of machine. If you are looking at a Daewoo, you are looking at an older machine from a builder whose current name is Doosan — which can be a good buy, and is worth knowing rather than guessing at.

What does a used CNC lathe cost?

Across the 1,221 CNC lathes KD has listed with a published price, most fall between $39,500 and $129,500. The full range runs from $4,500 to $799,000, but neither end of that is a useful planning figure — the bottom is an old, basic machine and the top is a large multi-tasking machine that few buyers are shopping for.

What actually moves the number, in rough order: the builder, whether it has live tooling or a sub-spindle, the age, and the hours. The median machine in our listings was built in 2013.

Every figure here is an asking price from KD’s own listings across 1,221 machines. It is not a record of final transaction values, and it is not a valuation of any particular machine.

And since hours are the first thing most buyers ask about, here is how we read them on a production CNC lathe:

Treat that as a scale rather than a verdict. Hours tell you how much work a machine has done, not how well it was looked after — and the two do not always agree. A high-hour machine from a shop that maintained it properly can be a better buy than a low-hour machine that sat neglected or was run hard on unsuitable work. Hours are the question to open with; condition is the question that settles it.

What should you check before committing?

If you can get the machine under power, this is what to work through:

• The spindle. The single most expensive thing to put right, and the first thing to listen to and feel.
• Motion in all axes. Run each one through its full travel, not just a short jog.
• Way wear. Tells you how hard the machine has worked and how well it was kept, and it does not always match the hour meter — which can be reset.
• The tailstock. Check it moves, clamps and lines up.
• Turret indexing. Index it through every station rather than a couple.
• Tooling. Establish exactly what comes with the machine.

That is the core of it rather than an exhaustive list — a machine you can watch cut will usually tell you the rest.

Beyond the machine itself: ask whether the machine is still under power and installed, because a machine you can watch cut is a machine you can evaluate. Establish what is included — tooling packages, chucks, steady rests, bar feeders and chip conveyors are frequently what separates two otherwise identical listings on price. And quote the reference number when you call; it gets you to the specific machine faster than a description will.

How many hours is a lot on a used CNC lathe?

As a rough scale, we read 1,000 to 2,000 hours as low, 3,000 to 6,000 as medium and 7,000 to 10,000 as high. Hours tell you how much work a machine has done rather than how well it was maintained, so a well-kept high-hour machine can be the better buy.
