A Swiss lathe earns its place when you are making long, slender or highly intricate parts under about 1.5 inches in diameter. Bar capacity is the decision that follows, because it sets the part size the machine can take. Most used Swiss lathes KD lists fall between $49,900 and $145,900.

Do you need a Swiss lathe at all?

This is the question most people are really asking, and it has a fairly clean answer.

Choose a Swiss lathe over a conventional CNC lathe when you are machining long, slender or highly intricate small-diameter parts — typically under 1.5 inches in diameter.

The reason comes down to how the two machines hold the work. On a conventional fixed-headstock lathe the bar is gripped in the chuck and the tool moves along it, so the further the tool travels from the chuck, the more the part can deflect. On a Swiss machine the headstock slides and the material is supported right at the point of cutting, so a long thin part stays supported all the way down its length.

That is why Swiss machines dominate work like medical components, connector pins, fasteners, fittings and small shafts — parts where the length-to-diameter ratio would make a conventional lathe chatter or push the part off size.

If your parts are larger in diameter, or short and stout, a conventional CNC lathe will very likely do the job with fewer complications and at lower cost. Swiss is not a general upgrade to a lathe; it is a different tool for a specific shape of work.

What bar capacity do you need?

Once you have decided Swiss is right, bar capacity is the decision. It sets the largest diameter of material the machine will take, and buyers choose the machine directly from the size of the parts they are making.

It is also among the most consistently recorded specifications on used Swiss machines — KD records it on about three quarters of the Swiss lathes it has listed, just behind the control and ahead of the spindle speed — so it is a spec you can usually filter on from the page.

Machines cluster into recognisable size classes rather than spreading evenly. Across KD’s own Swiss listings:

A few machines sit outside those clusters, from a 7 mm Tornos Swiss Nano at the small end up to a 52 mm Ganesh at the large.

The practical advice is to size to the work you actually have, with a little headroom, rather than buying the largest capacity you can afford. A larger machine costs more, and capacity you do not use is capacity you paid for.

Note that the same machine family is often sold in several capacities — Tsugami’s B0205, B0326 and B0386 run through 20, 32 and 38 mm respectively — so if you like a builder, you can usually find the size you need within the same range.

Guide bushing or no guide bushing?

This is a real decision, not a detail, and it is worth settling before you shortlist machines.

The guide bushing is the sleeve that supports the bar right at the cutting point, and it is what gives a Swiss machine its ability to hold size on long slender work.

Running with a guide bushing generally means buying ground or precision-drawn bar stock, because the bar is sliding through a close-fitting sleeve and any variation in the bar shows up in the part. It also leaves a longer unusable remnant at the end of every bar.

Running without one — sometimes called chucker mode, and something many modern machines can be converted to — accepts ordinary bar stock and wastes less material at the end of each bar. What you give up is the support that makes very long slender parts possible. Shorter parts frequently do not need the bushing at all.

Broadly: the longer and more slender the part relative to its diameter, the more the guide bushing earns its keep. If your parts are short, going without can save real money in material and setup.

Because it changes what stock you buy and what you can run, establish which way a machine is configured — and whether it can be converted — before you commit.

What does a used Swiss lathe cost?

Across the 90 Swiss lathes KD has listed with a published price, most fall between $49,900 and $145,900, with the full range running from $4,500 to $329,500. The bottom of that range is an older, smaller machine; the top is a large, recent, fully optioned one.

The median machine KD has listed was built in 2015, which makes this the youngest fleet of any machine class we publish a guide for. Swiss machines tend to reach the used market in better condition and closer to current specification than most classes.

Tsugami is the make we have handled most, at 32 machines with a median asking price of about $129,900. Star is now the second we have enough of to quote, at 14 priced machines and a median of about $98,000.

We are not publishing per-brand figures for the rest. Citizen and Ganesh each sit at exactly ten priced machines — on the floor rather than above it — and below about ten a median is not a market rate but an anecdote, which can turn on a single sale. Why is there so little used Swiss inventory?

You will notice that far fewer used Swiss machines are available than conventional CNC lathes — KD has listed 1,484 conventional CNC lathes against 116 Swiss.

The reason is simply that there are fewer Swiss users out there. It is a specialised machine bought by shops doing a particular kind of work, so fewer were bought new and fewer come back to the used market. It is not that they change hands unusually quickly.

What that means for you as a buyer is practical: when the right size and configuration appears, it is worth moving on it, because the next one may be months away rather than weeks. It also means it is worth telling us what you are looking for even when nothing suitable is listed — we can watch for it.

What should you ask before buying?

The same three questions that open any used CNC lathe purchase apply here, and in the same order:

  1. How many hours does it have? As a rough scale we read 1,000 to 2,000 hours as low, 3,000 to 6,000 as medium, and 7,000 to 10,000 as high. Hours are hit or miss on any used listing, ours included — where we have the figure we try to publish a photo of the hours screen. If you do not see one, ask with the reference number.
  2. What control is on it? If your shop is already standardised on a control family, that is a genuine reason to weight your search.
  3. Are there any issues, and can you see it run under power? Spindle, motion through the full travel of every axis, way wear, the tailstock, turret indexing through every station, and exactly what tooling is included.

Two things specific to Swiss are worth adding. Establish whether the machine has live tooling and a sub-spindle — 39 of the Swiss machines KD has listed carried live tooling and 28 a sub-spindle, and on this class of machine they are often what makes a part single-operation rather than two. And find out what bar feeder comes with it, because a Swiss machine without a suitable bar feeder is not a working cell.
