Three things decide whether a used CMM fits your shop: measuring volume, stated accuracy, and the probe head.
Measuring volume is the X, Y and Z travel. It needs to clear your largest part with room for fixturing, not merely fit it.
Accuracy is published as a length-measurement error in the form A + L/K micrometres, per ISO 10360. On a used machine, treat that as a starting point rather than a promise: it assumes a stable floor and a temperature-controlled room, and it should be re-verified after the move.
The probe head matters as much as the frame. A touch-trigger head is the economical choice for prismatic parts and hole patterns; a scanning head costs more and is what you need for form, profile and surface work. Retrofitting a different head later is rarely cheap.
Bridge machines cover most general inspection. Horizontal-arm and gantry machines suit large weldments and sheet-metal assemblies. Portable arms and laser trackers trade absolute accuracy for the ability to measure parts that cannot be moved.
Two things buyers most often miss: whether the metrology software licence transfers with the machine, and whether the original probe kit and styli are included.
