Why sell your EDM machine to KD Machinery

The question a wire EDM buyer asks first is whether it threads on its own, because that is what lets the machine run overnight and unattended, which is most of why a shop owns one. 88 of the EDMs we have traded have auto wire threading. Mitsubishi is the make we handle most at 55 machines, with AgieCharmilles at 27 and Fanuc at 21, and 43 of ours carry glass scale feedback, which is the difference between a machine that holds size and one that used to.

What decides what a used EDM machine is worth

Auto wire threading and whether it still reliably threads, which 88 of ours are fitted with. A machine that will not thread cannot run unattended and is a different machine commercially.

Glass scale feedback, on 43 of ours. It is what tells a buyer the machine can still hold a tolerance rather than merely report one.

Filtration and the chiller: filter type, hours since change, resin condition, and whether the chiller holds temperature.

Generator and power supply generation, which decides surface finish and cutting speed more than the year does.

Table travels and maximum workpiece size and weight, plus the tank and whether it seals.

Consumables in stock — wire, filters, resin, guides and power feed contacts. They are worth real money and are usually left behind.

Whether it has been powered up recently. An EDM left standing with old water in it deteriorates in ways that are expensive and invisible from photographs.

How to sell a EDM machine

An EDM is bought on whether it still cuts to size unattended. Before it is listed:

Cut a test piece, measure it, and keep both the part and the program.

Film it threading the wire automatically. This single clip answers the first question every buyer has.

Change or check the filters and the resin, and say when it was last done.

Photograph the tank, the guides, the power feed contacts and the control screen showing hours.

List the consumables and workholding you are including, because unused wire, filters and tooling are worth more than sellers expect.

Selling a EDM machine: common questions

The auto threader is unreliable. Should I get it fixed first?

Get it diagnosed, at least. Threading faults are frequently guides, contacts or water quality rather than the threader itself, and those are cheap. A machine that threads on demand in front of a buyer is worth markedly more than one where the seller says it usually works, so this is one of the few repairs that reliably pays for itself.

It has been sitting unused for a year. What does that do to the price?

More than most sellers expect, which is why it is worth addressing. Standing water, old resin and dry seals cause problems a buyer cannot see and therefore assumes the worst about. Powering it up, running fresh water through it and cutting a test piece turns an unknown machine into a demonstrated one.

Do the chiller and filtration go with the machine?

They should. An EDM without its chiller and filtration is not a working machine, and both were sized for it. Sold together the buyer commissions it on arrival; sold apart you have reduced the machine to a shell and kept two items that are hard to sell on their own.

Is a sinker EDM harder to sell than a wire machine?

It sells to a narrower group, mostly mold and die shops, but those buyers know exactly what they want and are not casual about it. What matters more than the type is the electrode holding, the C axis if it has one, and whether the machine can be shown burning. We trade both.
